Study of Effect of Composition of Milk on the Duration of Breast Feeding

Abstract
Present study was carried out to determined the factor influencing duration of breast feeding. 1656 cases were analysed for observe the practice of infant feeding during the-period of 1976 to 1978. : Chemical analysis was done for sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and iron in the colostrum yield from 54 mothers and mature milk yield from 28 mothers to evaluate the effect of composition of milk on the duration of breast feeding.
The following results were obtained.
1. Main food during the infancy was dependent on breast feeding about 54% of women at 1976, 51% at 1977, and 44% at the 1978.
2. Sodium and potassium concentration in colostrum showed slightly lower than that of
other reporters but there was no significant difference in calcium, phosphorus and iron.
3. The composition of mature milk showed almost equal value to the result of other re-
porters but concentration of calcium showed slightly lower than that of Europian mothers.
4. The most low value was found in the composition of colostrum from mothers who
were stopped breast feeding within 1/2 month of delivery and highest value was found in
the colostrum from mother who were discontinued breast feeding at one month after
delivery.
5. Significantly lower content of calcium was found from the milk of discontinued breast-fed mother in contrast to the milk from mother who has continued breast feeding for long time.
6. Based on these findings, it is estimated that the one of the reason of stopping breast feeding was composition of colostrum and calcium content of mature milk.
